The Jordan Gogos and Akira Isogawa show at Australian Fashion Week 2023 was one of the most exciting and creative shows I’ve seen. It wasn’t just fashion — it felt like art, movement, and culture all coming together on the runway.
Held at Carriageworks in Sydney, the show was packed with colour, texture and unexpected shapes. Jordan Gogos is known for his bold and sculptural designs, while the legendary Akira Isogawa brings a softer, more delicate approach with his beautiful Japanese-inspired fabrics. Together, they created something truly original.
From the moment the first model walked out, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a typical fashion show. The outfits were big, colourful and detailed. Some looked like moving sculptures, with layers of fabric, hand-painted patterns, and large, padded shapes rising from heads, shoulders and arms. Others featured traditional-style robes with floral prints, embroidery, and soft flowing fabrics.
One of my favourite looks was a long robe with gold and red fabric, stitched together in bold shapes. It looked like something from a dream — part costume, part sculpture, part high fashion. The mix of materials, colours and techniques showed just how much time, thought and creativity went into every piece.
The show felt like a celebration — of cultures coming together, identity, and collaboration. Seeing a younger designer like Jordan Gogos work with an Australian icon like Akira was powerful. It was like two generations coming together to create something fresh. Throw in non-traditional size models and First Nation models, it was a show like never before!
This wasn’t just a fashion show — it was a visual experience that stayed with you long after it ended. Bold, fun, meaningful — and totally unforgettable.
Jordan Gogos has been doing Australia Fashion Week shows since 2001, with each show somehow out doing the previous. If you ever get the chance to score a ticket to his show – GO!! It will be one of the most memorable nights of your life.
